Studco & Hilti: Sound transmission loss testing for building elements

The acoustics team tested the airborne sound insulation of new wall systems provided by Hilti Australia and Studco Building Systems.

Challenge

Studco Building Systems is a global provider of engineered innovative building products for walls, ceilings and architectural finishing systems. In this construction project they used a Hilti CFS TTS preformed top track seal that replaces traditional ways of using acoustic sealant, on the test wall system.

They required acoustic testing of wall systems including sound leakage from construction gaps within a short time frame with remote monitoring for their offsite team.

Solution

The UTS Tech Lab team developed scientific testing systems using Brüel & Kjær instruments, facilitating quick and easy testing to standards, including ISO 354 and ISO 10140. The project included a live audio-visual feed for remote observation and monitoring of acoustic testing. The Acoustics Labs contains cameras and an audio system with 64 DPA 4060 microphones and Yamaha DAW systems. This service allowed the client to see and hear the test without onsite presence. The team completed the testing in 2 days delivering a test report per test sample and the measurement data for Studco & Hiltis own R&D.
